THE MAGICIAN ON THE SKYWALK is Wu Ming-Yi’s latest work and a linked story collection. It is is a magical and nostalgic look at the life at Chung Hwa Market in Taipei, from its construction in the 1960s to its initial demolition in the 1990s, and the kids in the local neighborhood. It’s a story about growing up for the protagonist and his friends, for the Chung Hwa Market, and for the entire city. The book has garnered rave reviews since publication and was chosen as the Book of the Year by Books.com, the biggest online bookstore in Taiwan. This is unheard of – a story collection to be chosen as the book fo the year. In his introduction, author Chang Ta-chun writes, “I haven’t been moved and shaken by such a sincere and gifted writer’s work in a long time.” Wu Ming-Yi has earnestly transmuted materials from his own experience, not just into a story but also into a profound yet lucid understanding of life.
